Characterized by the excelent UV transmission, high damage threshold,
and high birefringence, KDP (Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate) and KD*P
(Potassium Dideuterium Phosphate) are useful commercial NLO materials
for doubling, tripling and quadrupling of Nd:YAG laser at room
temperature or an elevated temperature. They are also excellent
electro-optic (EO) crystals with high electro-optic coefficients, widely
used as electro-optical modulators and Pockels cells for Q-switched
lasers.
DKDP and KDP are known as analogs, though their properties differ due to DKDP deuteration. The nonlinearity of these crystals is relatively low, but they can be grown in large size. The main drawback is that they are highly hygroscopic, therefore sealed housing and dry operating conditions have to be ensured.
KDP and DKDP crystals have such applications as nonlinear frequency doublers, triplers, and quandruplers
of Nd-doped lasers and as Q-switch devices for Ti:Sapphire, Alexandrite,
Nd-doped lasers.
